Recent changes in the field of data visualization—in part driven by changes in big data, open data, open source programming and tools, and data-driven journalism—begs the question of whether these advances can be used to help change the world for the better. For example, does widespread availability of big and open data mean that social and policy challenges can be better addressed? How does the increased flexibility to extract, use, and process such data impact research? In this talk, I’ll discuss these recent trends and how I think they might or might not help solve today’s issues.
