This session includes three papers that examine how the sources of healthcare cost growth has shifted in terms of the burden of disease and their influence on treatment patterns. The panel focuses on different patient populations. Despite this, the message is coherent, and that is that while policies have addressed the cost growth in the supply of healthcare, disease growth is still a main driver of cost growth. As such policy, at all levels, should increase their focus on preventing chronic disease onset.
