The Regional Energy Plans (REP) are the expression of regional energy land use planning process that was born from goals and actions defined in Chile’s Energy Agenda (2014), the National Energy Policy 2050 (2015), and other energy regulatory processes .

The REP design considers a phase of energy diagnosis with the analysis of energy supply and energy demand at a regional scale, which addresses the different segments of the energy sector and the existing and projected infrastructure in generation, transmission and electrical distribution; transportation, transformation, storage and distribution of fuels.

In the Construction phase of the Plan, uses and aptitudes of the territory are identified, considering especially the potentials of renewable energies (solar, wind, biomass, hydraulic, marine) and the areas with energy aptitude (geothermal, pumped storage, thermoelectric, etc). Through the geospatial analysis of territorial variables especially relevant for the development of the energy sector - objects of territorial assessment (OTA) - identified in the region and organized into seven thematic groups: natural, cultural, productive, planning, risks and threats, management and infrastructure; restricted, conditioned and unconditioned energy interest areas are defined.

The purpose of the Regional Energy Plans is to articulate the strategic definitions of the national level with those of regional scale, such as Regional Development Strategies, to propose Alternatives for Energy Territorial Structure (AETS) that can be collected by regional planning and territorial planning instruments such as the Regional Land Use Plans, as drivers to transition for a more sustainable energy sector.
