We try to understand the intergenerational transfer behavior in China, an early timing and
a large amount of property andnancial transfers from parents to children. Starting from
a standard altruistic parental transfer model a la Becker, we incorporate China's special
features and highlight the importance of son's housing access and its relationship to his own
marriage. Hence we offer a rationale for the seemingly bizarre phenomena. Our
empirical analysis will base on the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey (CLDS), which pro-
vides an unique opportunity to address this question because CLDS has detailed information
about parental property and monetary transfer.
