The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the relationship between harsh behavioral norms within no-excuses schools looking primarily at two charter school chains, KIPP and Mastery, and the hidden curriculum that is present within that model which serves low-income children of color. The current model is not structured to create independent, critical, assertive and creative thinkers. I will also discuss recommendations of how charter schools can create independent thinkers to be successful throughout college.
