The expansion of Medicaid, the public health insurance program for low-income Americans, has been linked to an improvement of financial wellbeing by a variety of measures, including credit scores, out-of-pocket spending, and medical debt. Building on this literature, I explore the relationship between Medicaid expansion and a significant financial outcome that researchers have not yet studied – housing instability – by relying on a new dataset that tracks evictions nationwide. I compare bordering between states that did and did not expand Medicaid to assess whether Medicaid expansion eases the financial burden that may lead to evictions.
