A wealth of data is now available on the educational performance of students around the world. What can we learn from this data about the performance of U.S. students and the U.S. schools? More generally, what can we learn from other countries, and in what respects do we need to be cautious in drawing such conclusions? This symposium will feature a presentation by Andreas Schleicher, who leads the PISA testing program, and Hanna Skandera, who heads the New Mexico Department of Education. Helen Ladd, who has studied education reforms in various parts of the U.S. as well as other countries, and James Liebman, former chief accountability officer for the New York City Schools, will respond.
