This paper presents the findings from a stakeholder process the author is conducting with tribal government leaders in New Mexico. The School of Public Administration at the University of New Mexico is starting a Native American Governance concentration in its MPA program, and attempting to identify the primary governance challenges of tribal governments in order to help structure its course offerings. Particular needs of tribal governments include the training of finance and budget officers, contracting specialists, social workers, intergovernmental relations specialists, grant writing specialists, and natural resource managers, all of which can be well served by schools of public affairs if they are attuned to the special circumstances of tribal nations. This paper and presentation is designed to initiate a conversation on how professional schools can better serve indigenous communities.
