Do school districts hire more teachers when they no longer collectively bargain? A 2011 ban on formal negotiation in Tennessee only affected some school districts, allowing a differences-in-differences analysis. De-unionization modestly reduced teacher compensation and increased teacher-student ratios. The results suggest that union compensation premiums restrict the size of the teaching workforce.
