Recent work has documented a trend towards vertical integration between physician practices and hospitals. Yet, little work explores differences in rates of vertical integration by practice type. We find that the probability that physician practices have integrated is increasing across all practice types, however increases were largest among key specialties including oncology, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, and general surgery. Rates of integration were also higher than average among adult primary care practices. Rates of integration were highest among cardiology and oncology, however oncology practices had the highest rate of new integration with 50 percent of non-integrated oncologists in 2009 becoming practicing in an integrated setting by 2015.
